The purpose of this module is to describe and explain competency based employee performance management through a public health lens. A competency based management approach focuses on the competencies, or observable knowledge, skills and abilities described in behavioural terms, and required for successful job performance.

This module will present:

  • A step by step approach to Public Health Competency Based Employee Performance Management
  • How implementing competencies supports performance management and other HR activities
  • An explanation of how competency based performance management is different from any other performance management process
  • An overview of the new Public Health Competency Based Employee Performance Management Toolkit, produced by the Ontario Public Health Association and Partners (2009 and revised, 2010)
